Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) through its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and Thundercomm Technology Co., Ltd., announced their collaboration to support the large ecosystem of developers and manufacturers with their latest on-device artificial intelligence (AI) commercial technology. The effort is aimed at helping developers focused on creating the next-generation of AI-enabled products in China, such as factory controllers, car accessories, retail cameras, robots and more – taking advantage of the enhanced responsiveness, reliability, cost-effectiveness, privacy and security that can be obtained running AI on devices themselves rather than in the cloud.
As result of this collaboration, Thundercomm is introducing the Thundercomm TurboX, an AI Developer Kit. TurboX, which will be powered by a variety of Qualcomm Technologies’ platforms, will combine hardware and software capabilities designed to help developers and manufacturers create breakthrough AI-enabled devices. The kit is planned to include reference AI apps and models for use cases, such as object recognition, defect detection, scene detection and pet recognition, and it will feature a modularized design for extending the AI and camera capabilities.
Qualcomm Technologies’ platforms powering the kit integrate the Qualcomm® AI Engine, which is comprised of several hardware and software components integrated to help accelerate on-device AI. The Qualcomm AI Engine by Qualcomm Technologies includes the Qualcomm® Neural Processing SDK, which encompasses analysis, optimization, and debugging tools designed to allow developers and manufacturers to port trained deep learning networks into the TurboX kit.
“Along with 5G, AI is poised to help drive innovation and economic benefit through consumer and industrial devices,” said Cristiano Amon, president, Qualcomm Incorporated. “We are pleased to extend our collaboration with Thundercomm to put the power of on-device AI into the hands of innovators, and we are very excited about seeing what developers in China, as well as other parts of the world, can do with this AI kit.”
“Building on Qualcomm Technologies’ innovations, Thundercomm is well positioned to help accelerate the availability and proliferation of on-device AI in order to help the ecosystem create new and exciting solutions,” said Larry Geng, chairman, Thundercomm. “We look forward to continuing working with Qualcomm Technologies to help innovators access the latest on-device AI capabilities.”
The TurboX AI development kit is expected to be available the fourth quarter of 2018. Technical specifications and details are scheduled to be released later this year.
